Wood chipper death

Grief counselors will be at Poquoson High School in Virginia Monday to help students deal with the sudden, tragic loss of one of their classmates.

A 15-year old student died in a wood chipper accident Sunday evening.

Poquoson Police Chief Cliff Bowen says the teen was working with Old Dominion Tree and Lawn Care Service at a home on Wagner Road.

"They were doing some tree trimming and using a chipper machine to grind up some of the debris," Bowen said. "Apparently one of the members of the crew was shoveling debris into the back of the chipper, at which time the shovel he was using got caught in the blades and pulled him into the machine."

The boy died at the scene, Bowen said. The teen's identity has not been released.

"Based on everything we know this is an accident," said Chief Bowen. "It's one the most tragic accidents I've seen in my 25 years of law enforcement."

Reached by phone at his home Sunday night, Poquoson High School Principal Bernard Wright said, "This was a tragic accident. Our hearts go out to the family and friends of this young man."

Teenager killed after car was hit by a boat

A teenager was killed in a freak accident after the car she was in was hit by a boat, a jury was told.

Mark Tissiman was towing a trailer with a dinghy aboard behind his Range Rover Sport. But the boat’s mast broke loose just as it passed an oncoming Rover saloon driven by Duncan Smith in Dowles Road, Bewdley. The mast smashed through Mr Smith’s windscreen missing him but fatally injuring his front seat passenger, 19-year-old Sarah James.  She suffered massive head injuries and died in hospital two hours later.

At Hereford Crown Court prosecutor Peter Arnold claimed Tissiman had failed to secure the mast properly after leaving a sailing club at Chelmarsh reservoir 13 miles away with his wife. Tissiman, a 48-year-old heating engineer of Kidderminster Road, Bewdley, denies causing the death of Miss James by dangerous driving. Miss James, of Redstone Drive, Highley, had gone to the cinema in Kidderminster with her friend Mr Smith on the night of June 4 last year. They were going home around 10.45pm along the B4194 out of Bewdley when the defendant’s car approached from the Button Oak direction. In a statement read out in court, student Mr Smith said Miss James was sending a text on her phone when he heard a loud crack.

“My mouth filled with glass,” he said. “I said what the hell was that but Sarah didn’t respond. At first I thought we’d been hit by a brick or a bat.

“I pulled over but Sarah was completely still. She was still holding her phone with her head down. The pole was in the car between us.”

Mr Smith was rescued from the car by passing motorists and tried to staunch the blood from Miss James’s head injury. The trial continues.

Bear kills militants

A bear killed two militants after discovering them in its den in Indian-administered Kashmir, police say.

Two other militants escaped, one of them badly wounded, after the attack in Kulgam district, south of Srinagar. The militants had assault rifles but were taken by surprise - police found the remains of pudding they had made to eat when the bear attacked. It is thought to be the first such incident since Muslim separatists took up arms against Indian rule in 1989.

The militants had made their hideout in a cave which was actually the bear's den, said police officer Farooq Ahmed. The dead have been identified as Mohammad Amin alias Qaiser, and Bashir Ahmed alias Saifullah. News of the attack emerged when their injured comrade went to a nearby village for treatment.

"Word spread in the village that Qaiser had been killed by the bear," another police officer said.

A joint party of the police and army personnel went into the forest and collected the bodies of the two militants. Police say they also recovered two Kalashnikov assault rifles and some ammunition from the hideout.

Ice-skating bear kills circus director

One person was killed and another injured on Thursday when a bear rehearsing a "bears on ice" show attacked his handlers at a circus in the Central Asian state of Kyrgyzstan, circus officials said.

The five-year-old bear, part of a troupe of the prestigious Russian state circus, attacked and killed a director of the visiting circus during rehearsals in the Kyrgyz capital Bishkek.

"The incident occurred during a rehearsal by the Russian state circus company troupe which was performing in Bishkek with the program, Bears on Ice," Bishkek State Circus Company director Kurmangazy Isanayev told reporters.

The bear, who was wearing ice-skates when the incident occurred, attacked 25-year-old circus director Dmitry Potapov, dragging him across the ice rink by his neck and nearly severing one of his legs before relenting.

It was unclear what caused the bear to attack Mr Potapov, who died at the scene from his injuries under the care of medical personnel, he said.

A 29-year-old circus employee who attempted to rescue Mr Potapov while he was being mauled was also severely injured during the attack, doctor Gulnara Tashibekova told reporters.

"The victim has sustained serious injuries - deep scalp lacerations, bruising of the brain, lacerations on his body. His condition is considered critical," she said.

The bear was later shot and killed by local police, Mr Isanayev said.

The circus, located in the heart of the capital, has been cordoned off by police and emergency service workers and experts have been brought in to examine the animal.

The incident was not the first time a visiting Russian bear was involved in a deadly attack in Kyrgyzstan.

In 2002 a bear on loan from Russia to the Bishkek city zoo attacked and killed a small child who had reached out to pet it.

In that incident, local experts blamed the animal's aggressive behaviour on its severe malnourishment.

Bear attacks on people and livestock are common in the vast, sparsely inhabited regions of the former Soviet Union.

But deadly attacks are surprisingly rare in the popular circuses, which often use trained bears for comedic effect.

Training bears to wear and use ice skates and even play ice hockey is a standard stunt for the Russian circus.

Mother bleeds to death after cutting herself on a glass

A British mother has bled to death after falling and cutting herself on glass in a Costa del Sol bar.

Sally Feelly, 42, was drinking with friends in the early hours of Monday morning when the freak accident happened.

The mother-of-one suffered a deep cut to her armpit after stumbling against a table and landing on a crystal glass.

Friends and staff at the bar in the resort town of Nerja tried to stem the blood with wet towels and hand wipes.

An ambulance arrived within minutes, but the ex-pat was already unconscious.

She was pronounced dead an hour after reaching hospital.

Ms Feelly is thought to have been separated from her husband with whom she had a 14-year-old son.

She had lived in the popular resort for several years and worked as a hairdresser.

One of her friends said: 'We can't believe something like this has happened. She was a young person, healthy and full of life.

She was in perfect health, had no type of problem or illness and was not drunk or tipsy when she fell to the ground.

'People who were there can't believe what happened. How is it possible that such a silly accident can have such devastating consequences. It's absolutely horrific.'

A waiter said that the pool of blood was 'enormous'.

He added: 'It is incredible that a simple fall could end a life.'

Bridegroom shoots fiancee the night before their wedding

A bridegroom shot dead his fiancee the night before their wedding after mistaking her for a burglar.

John Tabutt killed his fiancee Nancy Dismore thinking she was a prowler, he told police in the US.

He said that he thought Ms Dinsmore, 62, was still lying in bed beside him when he heard a strange noise at their home in Winter Springs, near Orlando, Florida. He got up to investigate and then fired at a figure in the hallway.

In an emotional call to emergency services at 2.30am on the day before their wedding he can be heard sobbing: "I thought I had an intruder in the house. Honest to God, she looks dead.

"We were supposed to get married this Saturday," the Daily Mail reported

Kevin Brunelle, Winter Springs Police Department chief, said: "It appears to be a very tragic accident."

He added: "I've been told they were a great couple. The gentleman is very distraught."

Just hours later they had been due to marry in front of family and friends at the town's St Stephen Catholic Church.

On her Facebook page, Dinsmore had written on Thursday: "Two days and counting, all is going well".

Grandmother killed by cow

A grandmother has been killed in a freak accident after a cow barged against a gate which then hit her on the family farm.

Virginia Arnison-Newgass, 70, died from internal injuries as a result of the incident that happened as she tended cattle at her farm in Lockerley, near Romsey, Hants.

Mrs Arnison-Newgass, who had two children and five grandchildren, and her 42 year old son Richard were tending a cow which had just given birth to twin calves when it barged against the gate.

The gate swung through 90 degrees and slammed into her, the blow rupturing a growth on her liver.

Mrs Arnison-Newgass was treated by paramedics at the scene and than taken to Southampton General Hospital where she died from internal bleeding.

Her husband, Michael Arnison-Newgass, also 70, who had been a Captain in the Green Jackets, said: "Initially Richard thought she was having a heart attack and called an ambulance.

"We are now sure that the impact burst a growth on her liver and there was nothing that could be done to save her.The thing that's so sad is that she did not necessarily want to live to a great age but she did want to live longer to watch her little grandchildren grow up who she loved very much.

"Virginia was very happy. She was quintessentially English and a country person who lived what people now might see as a romantic idea of country life.

Girl crushed to death by family car

A three-year-old girl was crushed to death by a car when her mother forgot to put the handbrake on as she dropped her off at nursery school, an inquest heard.

Amber Whyte was crushed against a gatepost by the Toyota Picnic people carrier after her mother Jacqui failed to apply the handbrake properly.

The youngster was killed in full view of other parents dropping off children in the car park of £8,775-a-year Russell House School and Day Nursery in the village of Otford, near Sevenoaks, in Kent.

In a statement read out at an inquest into Amber's death held in Tunbridge Wells on Tuesday, Mrs Whyte, 40, said she was "ridden by guilt" since the accident on June 5 this year.

The civil servant explained how she had parked her car, got out and looked in the boot for a violin belonging to Amber's sister, Melody, five, also a pupil at Russell House, when the car started moving.

Mrs Whyte said: "As the car rolled back I heard a scream – I thought it was Melody.

She then spotted Amber, crushed between the car and the gatepost.

Amber, who was wearing her red and blue nursery uniform, was rushed to the Princess Royal Hospital in Farnborough, Kent, where she died.

A post-mortem examination found she had died of severe trauma to her neck and chest.

PC Andrew Waghorn, of Kent Police, said once the Toyota began rolling backwards, Mrs Whyte would not have been strong enough to stop it.

He said the car's handbrake had no defect, but Mrs Whyte may have thought she had applied it as the car's wheel was wedged against a kerb – meaning it didn't start moving as soon as she got out.

PC Waghorn said: "If she did park with the tyre against the kerb this may have led Mrs Whyte to have thought she had parked with the handbrake applied. Unfortunately this was not the case."

Coroner, Roger Hatch, who recorded a verdict of accidental death, gave his sympathy to Amber's parents and friends at the end of the brief hearing.
